How to get at a flying fish diff and lock it!
« on: 09 December 2009, 06:00:21 PM »
OK so I know of at least one other flying fish floating around here.... (OMG, fish and floating  :./: )

So lets get going!
may sound stupid but remove the shell, and the body posts as it make it easier later....

start with the car upside down or on its side which ever you find easier...
remove these screws:

then these screws:

then the screw holding the ariel tube holder...
then these screws and bolt:

I left the bolt on and slid the plate over, but its better to remove it.

next remove the top shock screws and camber turn buckles

Now to remove the body post support, be care full as these screws also hold the diff casings together!
It will not come apart but be carefull!

next loosen the allen key holding the centre shaft drive socket

now lift the rear diff and axels slightly and pull backwards whil pulling the centre drive socket forward, and they will seperate.

I then put the axels back so I dont loose them

and you have the diff

ignore the arrows in above image! I took them off and the gear to find out I did not need to!
on the rear is one screw, remove it WHILE HOLDING BOTH HALVES TOGETHER TIGHTLY!
then once the screw is removed gently peel the rear half away from the front and you may remove the diff!

there is 4 screws on other side of the sun gear and you may get to the gears, but the bearing on mine was stuck on the shaft and will not come off!
so for now its back together and I'll have another go another time...

I hope this helps someone out there!

OK so continuation from this!
how to LOCK the diff!

Right so assumin you have followed that above......
MAKE NOTE OF WHICH WAY AROUND THE SUN GEAR IS RELATIVE TO THE DRIVE SHAFT PINION!
and you have removed bearings off both sides of the diff, beware and do not loose the two thin washed between the sun gear and the bearing on that side!

and removing the 4 screws on the other side of the sun gear....
well here is the inside of the sun gear with the gear casing removed.....

then I cleaned the centre and removed the circlip and seperated the parts....

there is a washed on rear of the small planet gear, remove that too!

so now find a thin bit of plastic, 1 to 1.5mm to LOCK the diff, if you want to stiffen it then thinner 0.3 to 0.5 I'd guess, any more and it will start to lock up.....

so place the plastic between the sun and planet gear and refit the circlip, its quite hard and took me and my dad (4 hands) to do it!

then refit the other half on the diff.....

back over the modified planet/sun unit...
and tighten the 4 screws thru the sun gear!
this will be easy or hard depending on how thick the plastic is you have put in!
with 1.5mm (like mine) the screws where harder to pull the two halves together!

then put the two washers back on the sun side of the unit and put both bearings back on and refit to diff casing!
AGAIN MAKE SURE THE SUN GEAR IS IN CORRECT ORIENTATION TO THE DRIVE SHAFT PINION!
I didnt and got it wrong!
front go one way and rear go in opposite direction, and have to now redo the sun gear orientation!

Have you tried the old blutac trick John, fill the diff with it, you can always remove it later

...or hot glue

...or a more permanent fix is 2 part epoxy

I was trying to tighten it a bit but ended up locking it!
will try it out and see, getting mixed comments from guys...

some say locked rear but most saying not!
so some what confused but I'll give it a go, and as front and rear diff is identical can swap them around!

goes between the small gear and the big one.

but if unsure just pack it really tight with bluetac. or hotglue gun it will do same thing.
it was my first time doing this too and thought that the plastic ring will work, it has and NEVER gone loose.

the bluetac has gone loose in the HT1 AND the TL01 :(

redone HT1 with bluetac seems ok for mo.....
im thinking of using gorilla glue now
